⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Following the death of his wife, Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man discovers he has throat cancer. After his rebellious son is expelled from school, Ip travels to 1960s San Francisco to find him a better education. There, he reunites with his most famous student, Bruce Lee, who has upset the local martial arts community by teaching Westerners. Ip Man finds himself caught between the racist local authorities and the traditional Chinese Benevolent Association. When a bigoted U.S. Marine Sergeant (Scott Adkins) begins brutalizing local masters to prove the superiority of Karate, the aging Ip Man must step into the ring one last time to defend the honor of his culture and secure a future for the next generation. THE PROS Donnie Yen is a total winner in his final outing as the Grandmaster, bringing a sincere, quiet dignity to a character that has defined his career. The fight choreography by Yuen Woo-ping is epic status—it ditches the flashy wirework for a punchy, "bone-crunching" realism that makes every hit feel heavy. Scott Adkins is quality as the villainous Barton Geddes, providing a physically imposing threat that actually feels like a match for Ip Man. It’s an 8/10 because the "alleyway fight" featuring Bruce Lee (Danny Chan) is a genuine belter and a perfect tribute to the legend’s style. The emotional weight of Ip Man’s terminal diagnosis gives the film a sincere heart that the previous sequels sometimes lacked. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the American villains are written as a bit of a damp squib—they are cartoonishly racist "one-note" caricatures that lack any depth or nuance. The pacing can feel slightly sluggish in the middle act as the film balances four different subplots, from school bullying to military politics. It misses a 9/10 mark because some of the dialogue is quality-deficient and leans a bit too hard into "nationalistic" tropes that feel less organic than the original 2008 film.
