⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Nearly a decade after he swam away from the CIA in New York, Jason Bourne is back—and he is still having a very rough time. Living off the grid as a bare-knuckle fighter, David Webb is pulled back into the world of high-stakes espionage when Nicky Parsons retrieves files detailing his father's involvement in the Treadstone program. What follows is a relentless, globetrotting chase from Athens to Las Vegas, as Bourne tries to uncover the final pieces of his past while avoiding a new, clinical CIA director and a ruthless assassin with a personal vendetta. It is a high-tech, post-Snowden update to the franchise that feels like a greatest-hits tour of everything we loved about the original trilogy. THE PROS Matt Damon returning to the role is a absolute win; even with fewer lines than ever, he conveys everything through that haunted, determined physicality that made the character an icon. Paul Greengrass is back in the director's chair, and he delivers some truly breathtaking set-pieces—the motorbike chase through a massive riot in Athens is a sincere symphony of chaos that only this franchise could pull off. Alicia Vikander is a standout addition as the ambitious Heather Lee, bringing a cool, calculating energy that leaves you guessing about her true loyalties. It is a celebratory explosion of kinetic energy that proves, when it comes to "boots on the ground" action, Bourne is still the business. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because, despite the polished exterior, it feels a bit unoriginal. The plot is essentially a "remix" of the previous films—Bourne finds a fragment of his past, the CIA monitors him on big screens, and a car chase ensues. It is a bit of a Languid Burn in the middle when it tries to weave in a subplot about a social media giant that doesn't quite link up with the main story, and some of the "shaky cam" editing is so frantic it might give you a bit of a headache. It misses the 8/10 status because it lacks the emotional heart and sense of discovery that made the first three films so special; by now, Bourne knows who he is, so the stakes feel a bit more like a generic revenge mission. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Not bad at all, and certainly a step up from the Jeremy Renner spin-off, but it doesn't quite reach the dizzy heights of Ultimatum. It is a decent, hard-hitting thriller that delivers exactly what it says on the tin: Matt Damon punching people and driving cars very fast. Go and watch it if you have missed the gritty, realistic vibe of the series, but do not expect it to reinvent the wheel. It is a vault essential for franchise completionists, even if it feels a little bit like it is running on muscle memory. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Minimalist Dialogue: Despite being the titular character and on screen for most of the film, Matt Damon reportedly only has about 25 lines of dialogue in the entire movie, relying almost entirely on physical performance.• Vegas Carnage: The climactic car chase on the Las Vegas Strip was a massive undertaking that took five weeks to film and resulted in the destruction of 170 cars—most notably a SWAT truck plowing through a line of vehicles in front of the Bellagio.• Real Riots: While the Athens sequence looks incredibly authentic, it was actually filmed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. The production used hundreds of extras and real fire to recreate the atmosphere of the Greek anti-austerity protests. THE VIBE Like a grainy CCTV feed, the smell of cold asphalt and gun oil, and the sound of a heavy bassline kicking in just as someone jumps off a roof. It is tense, clinical, and incredibly fast-paced. It makes you want to throw your smartphone in a bin, buy a grey hoodie, and start checking your surroundings for hidden snipers.
