⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY When ordinary citizens start seeing demons and committing horrific crimes, the Justice League realizes this isn't a job for heat vision or Batarangs. Enter John Constantine, the world’s most cynical occult detective, who is "recruited" by Batman to lead a team of supernatural misfits. Alongside Deadman, Zatanna, Jason Blood (and his cranky demon roommate Etrigan), and Swamp Thing, they dive into the grimy underbelly of magic to stop a rising ancient evil. It’s a shadowy, mystical side of the DC universe that replaces alien invasions with blood rituals and soul-stealing. THE PROS Matt Ryan as John Constantine is a absolute win; he embodies the character so perfectly that it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role. The chemistry between the magic-users is a sincere highlight, especially the history between Constantine and Zatanna which adds some much-needed weight to the plot. It’s a total belter for fans who want to see the "weirder" corners of DC, featuring creative spell-casting and creature designs that feel fresh compared to the usual superhero brawls. Batman playing the "skeptical straight man" in a world of ghosts and demons provides some genuinely funny banter. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because it feels a bit smaller in scale compared to the massive "War" or "Flashpoint" epics. The villain, while tied to the lore, is a bit of a head-scratcher and doesn't quite leave a lasting impression once the credits roll. There’s a certain point in the middle act where the plot gets a bit wet, relying on a "find the next magical item" structure that slows down the momentum. It misses the 9/10 status because it serves more as an introductory piece for the team rather than a standalone masterpiece. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a sincere recommendation for anyone who likes their heroes a bit more "supernatural" and a lot more "anti." It’s a vault essential for seeing the magical heavy-hitters get their time in the spotlight. Go and watch it for Constantine’s wit and the brilliant Etrigan rhymes—it’s the business for a moody night in. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Perfect Casting: Matt Ryan first played Constantine in the short-lived live-action NBC series; fans loved his portrayal so much that DC brought him back for this film, effectively making him the definitive voice and face of the character. • Rhyme Time: Writing the dialogue for Etrigan the Demon is notoriously difficult because he is a "rhyming demon" of Hell; the writers had to ensure every single one of his lines followed a consistent poetic meter throughout the film. • Batman's Inclusion: Batman wasn't originally a core part of this team in the comics, but the filmmakers included him to give the audience a "grounded" perspective and to help bridge the gap between the mainstream League and the Dark side. THE VIBE Like a rain-slicked London alleyway at midnight. It smells like cigarette smoke, old parchment, and sulfur.
