⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Matthew Vaughn returns for a high-octane sequel that takes the British secret service across the pond. When the Kingsman headquarters are wiped out by a mysterious drug cartel known as "The Golden Circle," Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) head to Kentucky to find their American counterparts: The Statesman. Led by Champagne (Jeff Bridges) and featuring agents Tequila (Channing Tatum) and Whiskey (Pedro Pascal), the two groups team up to take down Poppy (Julianne Moore), a cheerful but psychotic drug lord who has a penchant for 50s nostalgia and human meat grinders. It’s a bigger, louder, and much more mental expansion of the first film’s world. THE PROS The action choreography remains a total winner; the high-quality, fast-paced camerawork in the opening car chase and the snowy mountain sequence is a banger to watch. Pedro Pascal is a legendary shout as Agent Whiskey, bringing a sincere bit of swagger and some incredible lasso-based combat that steals every scene he's in. It earns a 6/10 because the chemistry between the British and American agents is honest and fun, providing some decent banter about the differences between suits and stetsons. Elton John’s extended cameo is a bit of a head-scratcher on paper, but in practice, it’s a high-quality bit of comedy that actually lands. The return of Colin Firth provides a sincere emotional hook that fans of the first flick will definitely appreciate. THE CONS It lands a 6/10 because it suffers from a major case of "sequel bloat," with a runtime that feels quite sluggish at 141 minutes. The plot is a bit of a clanger, overstuffed with too many characters and subplots—like Channing Tatum’s Agent Tequila being sidelined for almost the entire movie, which feels quality-deficient given the marketing. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Lasso Lessons: Pedro Pascal spent weeks training with a high-quality stunt team to master the electronic lasso, though a lot of the more "epic" maneuvers in the final fight had to be enhanced with digital effects to keep the speed up. • Secret Wardrobe: To keep the Statesman vibe honest, the production collaborated with high-end brands like Stetson and Lucchese to create authentic, high-quality Western gear that contrasted with the Kingsman’s bespoke Savile Row suits. • Poppy’s Diner: Julianne Moore’s 1950s-style hideout, "Poppy Land," was built as a massive, high-quality practical set in a studio in London, designed to feel like a "legendary" slice of Americana hidden deep in the Cambodian jungle. THE VIBE Like a double shot of bourbon in a crystal glass. It smells of expensive aftershave, fried chicken, and the metallic tang of a high-tech umbrella.
