👤 BIOGRAPHY

Pedro Pascal has somehow become the internet's favourite dad despite the fact he spends most of his screen time adopting children, protecting children or looking absolutely knackered while trying to keep children alive. The bloke has made an entire career out of being everyone's reluctant guardian, and honestly, nobody seems to be complaining.

Mind you, success didn't exactly come overnight. For years, Pedro was one of those actors you'd spot in everything without knowing his name. He popped up in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Law & Order and enough police dramas to fill an entire Sky channel. By his own admission, there were times when he thought acting just wasn't going to happen for him. Which makes what came next all the more brilliant.

Then along came Game of Thrones. In just one season, Pedro turned Oberyn Martell into one of the coolest characters the show ever produced. Charming, dangerous and blessed with the confidence of a bloke who'd never once doubted himself in his life, Oberyn became an instant fan favourite. Unfortunately, this being Game of Thrones, things didn't exactly end well. Let's just say people still wince thinking about it.

From there, his career absolutely exploded. He became the helmet-wearing bounty hunter Din Djarin in The Mandalorian, somehow making audiences emotionally attached to a man whose face you barely saw. Then he stepped into Joel Miller's battered boots in The Last of Us, giving us one of the grumpiest and most emotionally damaged father figures in television history. Honestly, if Pedro's agent gets offered another role involving protecting a child, they probably just sign the contract automatically these days.

And despite becoming one of the biggest stars around, Pedro still gives off the energy of somebody who's mildly confused by the whole thing. He laughs at himself, gets awkward in interviews and seems genuinely chuffed that people like him. Which is refreshing in a world full of celebrities who act like they've been personally appointed by the King.

Insomniacs Trivia

• Pedro nearly gave up acting altogether in his thirties because money was tight and work was drying up. A few years later, he was stealing scenes in Game of Thrones. Not bad going.

• His real surname is Balmaceda, but he adopted his mother's surname, Pascal, in honour of her after her death. A lovely touch, and one that's now recognised all over the world.

• Pedro became an internet sensation thanks to clips of him laughing uncontrollably, forgetting what he's saying and generally behaving like somebody's slightly sleep-deprived uncle. Which, to be fair, only made people love him more.

Insomniacs Take

Pedro Pascal has become one of those rare actors who feels impossible to dislike. He's got the charisma of an old-school movie star, the humour of your funniest mate and the face of a bloke who's just been told there's no more tea bags left. Whether he's fighting off zombies, battling stormtroopers or getting emotionally attached to another adopted child, he brings warmth and humanity to everything he touches. And honestly, cinema and television are much better for having him around.
