    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Life is a 2017 sci-fi horror that essentially asks, "What if E.T. was a sociopathic starfish?". A crew on the International Space Station (ISS) recovers a dormant single-celled organism from Martian soil samples. They wake it up, name it "Calvin," and promptly realize that every single one of its cells is "all muscle, all brain, and all eye". What starts as a historic scientific breakthrough quickly devolves into a desperate game of hide-and-seek where the crew members are the snacks. THE PROS The cast is top-tier, with Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds bringing actual weight to the "smart people making bad choices" trope. The creature design for Calvin is genuinely unsettling—it starts as a translucent jellyfish and evolves into a terrifyingly intelligent predator. The eight-minute long take that opens the movie is a technical masterpiece, designed to be the "inverse version of Gravity". Plus, the ending is a sincere gut-punch that refutes the typical "hero wins" Hollywood formula. THE CONS It is determinedly unoriginal, leaning so heavily on the *Alien* (1979) blueprint that you can almost hear Ridley Scott’s lawyer calling. The characters, while well-acted, are a bit thin; we find out David prefers space to Earth, and Sho has a new baby at home, but that’s about as deep as the characterization goes. It misses the higher ratings because of the "stupid astronaut" syndrome—it’s a total head-scratcher why high-level scientists keep sticking their hands in cages with unknown Martian parasites. THE VERDICT A 7/10. It’s a gripping, visceral thriller that works best if you don’t think too hard about the logic. It’s a bit of a let-down if you wanted groundbreaking sci-fi, but as a "Go To" popcorn horror in space, it’s a solid entry. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Venom Theories: Fans spent years speculating that *Life* was a secret prequel to *Venom* (2018), especially since the writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, had previously written a *Venom* script. • Recycled Footage: A trailer for the film actually re-used B-roll footage from *Spider-Man 3* showing a crowd reacting to a disaster. • Wire Work: To simulate zero gravity, the actors spent hours suspended on wires that were later digitally erased—Jake Gyllenhaal admitted the cramped sets naturally heightened the tension. • Career Moves: Ryan Reynolds was originally supposed to play the lead role (David), but scheduling conflicts forced him to take the smaller, "comic relief" role of Rory. • Ledger Tribute: Gyllenhaal reportedly took the role in part to honour his late friend Heath Ledger, who had a deep fascination with space. • Design Team: It took approximately 1,500 CGI artists to design and animate Calvin’s final, snarling form. THE VIBE Like being trapped in a sterile, high-tech tin can with a very angry wet towel. It smells of recycled oxygen, industrial disinfectant, and primal fear.
