⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Set in 1989 New Mexico, Lou (Kristen Stewart) is a reclusive gym manager stuck in a dead-end town under the shadow of her criminal father, Lou Sr. (Ed Harris). Her world is upended when Jackie (Katy O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder headed for a competition in Vegas, rolls into town. The two fall into a pained, intense romance fueled by steroids, sweat, and a mutual desire to escape. But when a visceral act of violence strikes Lou’s family, the couple is dragged into a gritty spiral of murder and cover-ups that tests the limits of their love and sanity. THE PROS This is an absolute belter of a neo-noir that isn't afraid to get weird and bloody. It hits an 8 because Kristen Stewart is fantastic, delivering a pained, subtle performance that balances perfectly with Katy O’Brian’s physically imposing and increasingly unhinged energy. The chemistry is electric and feels completely honest, making their desperate situation feel all the more urgent. Director Rose Glass creates an epic, grimy atmosphere where the heat and the grit of the desert practically radiate off the screen. It’s a fair shout for one of the most unique thrillers of the year, blending body horror elements with a punchy, 80s-soaked crime story that keeps you on edge throughout. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the final act takes a surreal, hallucinatory turn that might be a bit of a head-scratcher for those expecting a more grounded resolution. It misses a higher mark because some of the supporting characters, while played brilliantly—especially Ed Harris as the bug-obsessed villain—can feel a touch like caricatures in the middle of such a pained, human story. The pacing is mostly solid, but it leans so heavily into its "pulpy" roots that some of the logic in the second half feels a bit pained and stretched for the sake of the spectacle. THE VERDICT 8/10. A gritty, sweat-stained, and visceral masterpiece of the "bad people doing bad things" genre. It’s an honest standout for the leads and an epic follow-up for Rose Glass that’s as pained as it is beautiful.
