⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY On the Polynesian island of Motunui, Moana is a headstrong teenager who feels a deep pull toward the ocean, despite her father’s strict rules against sailing beyond the reef. When a blight begins to kill the island’s crops and fish, she discovers that the demigod Maui stole the heart of the mother island, Te Fiti, centuries ago. To save her people, Moana sets out on a daring voyage across the open sea to find Maui and force him to restore the heart. It’s a stunning journey about identity, courage, and finding your own way when the map ends. THE PROS This is a total win and a genuine belter for Disney. Auli'i Cravalho is fantastic as Moana, but Dwayne Johnson is the real standout—he’s a total belter as Maui, bringing a sincere amount of wit and ego that makes the character jump off the screen. The music is an absolute win; Lin-Manuel Miranda’s songs are punchy and will stay in your head for weeks. The animation of the water is epic status; it’s a celebratory explosion of tech that still looks like the gold standard for the studio. It’s highly recommended because it ditches the traditional "romance" plot for a story about self-discovery and leadership. THE CONS It earns a 9/10 because, while it’s a masterpiece, the middle section on the boat can feel sluggish for very young viewers who just want more action. The "Kakamora" pirate scene—while visually cool—is a bit of a head-scratcher as it feels a tad like it was dropped in from a different movie just to pad the runtime. It misses the 10/10 mark only because it follows the Disney "hero’s journey" beats fairly closely, but it’s still a punchy, emotional ride. THE VERDICT A 9/10. Highly recommended. This is a vault essential for anyone with kids or anyone who just loves a great adventure. It’s a belter that proves you don't need a prince to be a hero. Go and watch it for "You're Welcome" and the glowing bioluminescent cave—it’s brilliant. THE VIBE Like a warm tropical breeze and the smell of salt spray. It smells like coconut, tropical flowers, and roasted pork. It makes you want to get on a boat, follow the stars, and realize that home isn't just where you are, but who you are.
