Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Three skilled martial artists—Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade—are lured to a mysterious island to compete in a legendary tournament that determines the fate of Earth. Guided by the thunder god Raiden, they must face off against the soul-stealing sorcerer Shang Tsung and his monstrous champions from Outworld. It’s a high-stakes battle where "Flawless Victory" isn't just a catchphrase, but the only way to prevent a full-scale invasion of our world. THE PROS This is a win for being one of the few video game adaptations from the 90s that actually understood the assignment. The atmosphere is a celebratory explosion of practical sets and moody lighting that perfectly captures the "mystical island" vibe. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa is a total belter as Shang Tsung; his performance is so iconic that he basically defined the character for every game and movie that followed. The soundtrack is absolute business—that main theme still hits like a freight train and gets you hyped for every fight. It’s a good movie because it balances the campy 90s energy with genuine martial arts spectacle. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because, while highly recommended, the CGI for Goro and Reptile hasn't aged particularly well and can look a bit "stiff" by modern standards. Some of the dialogue is a sincere head-scratcher and leans heavily into B-movie cheese. It misses the 9/10 mark because the violence is famously toned down to a PG-13 level, meaning we don't get the messy fatalities the games are known for. The pacing can feel sluggish in the transitions between fights, but the energy usually picks up once the fists start flying. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a recommendation for anyone who wants a nostalgic trip back to the peak of 90s action. It’s a vault essential and arguably the best video game movie of its era. Go and watch it for the Scorpion vs. Johnny Cage forest fight and that legendary soundtrack—it’s a belter. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Broken Bones: Bridgette Wilson-Sampras (Sonya Blade) did all her own stunts and actually broke several ribs during the fight scene with Kano, but she kept filming so the production wouldn't fall behind. • Casting "What Ifs": Cameron Diaz was originally cast as Sonya Blade but had to drop out after breaking her wrist during martial arts training. Also, Tom Cruise was reportedly considered for the role of Johnny Cage at one point. • Goro's Ego: The animatronic Goro cost over $1 million to build and was so complex it required over a dozen puppeteers to operate. He was notoriously temperamental on set, frequently breaking down and causing long delays. THE VIBE Like a neon-lit arcade on a Saturday morning. It smells like dry ice, salt spray, and leather gloves. It makes you want to shout "Test Your Might," learn how to throw a firebolt, and realize that fate is usually decided in a damp, torch-lit arena.
