⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) is a world-famous pop star whose career is currently in the ICU after a near-fatal stage accident. Desperate for a comeback, she flees to the German countryside to reunite with Sam (Michaela Coel), a visionary fashion designer and former best friend (and definitely former "something more"). For ten years, they’ve been estranged, but Mary needs Sam to craft the ultimate "resurrection" outfit. What starts as a tense psychological two-hander about art and ego turns into a Dalí-esque fever dream involving séances, body horror, and a ritualistic Satanic dance. THE PROS The lead duo is a "Guaranteed Banger." Anne Hathaway is in full "alien charisma" mode, playing a pop diva who is both terrifyingly focused and completely broken. Michaela Coel is her perfect foil, doing more with a silent stare than most actors do with a ten-minute monologue. Visually, director David Lowery (The Green Knight) delivers a stunning, mood-drenched experience. The stage design and lighting are futuristic and haunting, and the music—produced by Charli xcx—gives the film a legit pop-star pulse. It’s a movie that isn’t afraid to get "weird," pivoting from a gritty drama to a metaphysical fantasy in the second half. THE CONS It is aggressively "A24," meaning it’s often more interested in being a mood board than a movie. The screenplay can feel a bit dour and "po-faced," with characters speaking like they’re reading from a philosophy textbook. If you’re expecting a fast-paced "Lady Gaga" biopic, this isn't it. The supernatural shift in the final act is a massive "love it or hate it" moment that has left a lot of audiences scratching their heads. Some critics have also found it a bit coy about its central queer relationship, feeling a bit prudish for a movie billed as a "psychosexual thriller." THE VERDICT A 7/10. It’s a stylish, abstract, and occasionally frustrating séance of a film. It’s "The Business" for those who love high-fashion, high-concept dramas that make your brain crunch. It misses the 8 or 9 mark because it’s a bit too self-serious and lacks the self-awareness that could have made it a camp classic. Still, those individual scenes will be living rent-free on YouTube for years. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA To prepare for the role, Anne Hathaway took intensive vocal training and reportedly channeled the "militaristic precision" of real-world pop icons for her performance. Also, the film is a major co-production between the US and Germany, filmed largely in Cologne and Bonn to capture that specific, gloomy European "palatial estate" vibe. This also marks the first time Hathaway and Coel have worked together, and their chemistry was so intense that some crew members reported the air in the room felt "electrified" during their long, dialogue-heavy scenes. THE VIBE Like a silk dress caught in a barbed-wire fence. It’s elegant, expensive, and deeply uncomfortable, leaving you feeling like you’ve just woken up from a dream you can't quite explain.
