⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Llewelyn Moss is out hunting in the Texas desert when he stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong—lots of dead bodies, a dying man asking for water, and a satchel containing $2 million. He takes the cash, which turns out to be a massive mistake. Enter Anton Chigurh, a hitman with a bowl cut from hell and a pneumatic cattle gun, who tracks Moss across the border. Meanwhile, aging Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) tries to make sense of a world that’s becoming too violent for his old-school soul. It’s a game of cat-and-mouse where the "cat" is an unstoppable force of nature. THE PROS Javier Bardem’s performance as Chigurh is legendary. He doesn’t blink, he doesn't have a backstory, and he decides your fate with a coin toss. The Coen Brothers create a level of tension that is almost unbearable, made even more impressive by the fact that there is zero musical score in the film—every creak of a floorboard or jingle of a key sounds like a gunshot. It’s a visual masterpiece of the "Neo-Western" genre, stripped of all the Hollywood fluff. Josh Brolin is also fantastic as the guy who is just smart enough to stay alive, but not smart enough to leave the money. THE CONS The ending is notoriously "Coen-esque," meaning it’s meditative and philosophical rather than a giant explosion or a final showdown. If you want a neat bow on your thrillers, this will frustrate you. It’s a movie that demands you think about fate and the passage of time while you’re still trying to recover from the sight of a man getting his skull ventilated. Some people find the lack of a soundtrack a bit too "dry," making the 2-hour runtime feel longer than it actually is. THE VERDICT A "Guaranteed Banger" and an absolute 9/10. It’s a cold, hard look at the inevitability of evil and the exhaustion of goodness. It won Best Picture for a reason: it’s perfect filmmaking that doesn't feel the need to hold your hand. If you haven't seen it, just flip a coin—heads you watch it tonight, tails you watch it twice. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA During filming, Javier Bardem hated his haircut so much he claimed it was the most depressed he’d ever been; he said he "wasn't going to get laid for three months" because of it. Also, the production had to shut down for a day because a giant cloud of smoke from a nearby set drifted into their shots—that set belonged to There Will Be Blood, which was filming across the street. Two of the greatest movies of the 2000s were literally fighting for the same Texas air. THE VIBE Like a desert wind at midnight—cold, quiet, and carries the scent of something dying in the distance.
