⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 THE SUMMARY It’s a classic "what if we put two terrifying things together" pitch: a plane crash and hungry sharks. When a jet carrying a group of travelers—including the Governor’s daughter—goes down in the Pacific Ocean, it comes to rest on the edge of a massive underwater ravine. The survivors are trapped in an air pocket in the cabin, but as the plane begins to teeter over the edge, they realize they aren't alone in the dark water. It’s a race against time as the oxygen runs out and the predators move in for a snack. THE PROS Colm Meaney is easily the best thing here, bringing a sincere and professional vibe to the role of the veteran bodyguard that helps ground the more ridiculous moments. The initial plane crash sequence is actually quite gripping and well-executed, capturing the sudden chaos of a mid-air disaster with some decent practical effects. It’s a 5/10 because the concept of an underwater "locked room" thriller provides a few genuinely claustrophobic moments that keep you on edge. The lighting in the submerged cabin is used well to hide the budget constraints, creating a moody atmosphere where you’re constantly scanning the shadows for a fin. THE CONS It lands a 5/10 because the CGI sharks look a bit quality-deficient, often appearing more like a video game asset than a real threat. The logic is a bit of a clanger; for a plane that’s supposedly miles under the sea, the characters seem to handle the pressure and freezing temperatures with suspicious ease. The middle part is quite sluggish, filled with standard disaster movie dialogue that feels a bit "copy-pasted" from better films. It misses a higher mark because the supporting characters are mostly walking tropes, making it hard to feel any real sting when they inevitably get picked off. THE VERDICT A 5/10. A standard, slightly daft survival flick that is a winner if you’re a fan of "creature features" and don't mind a bit of cheese with your suspense. It’s a sincere effort to mash up two genres, but it lacks the "epic status" or the sharp wit needed to be more than a one-time watch. While it’s not exactly a banger, it’s a decent enough choice for a rainy evening when you want to switch your brain off and watch some sharks do their thing.
