⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Normal feels like someone threw Fargo, Nobody, and a fever dream into a snowblower and just hoped for the best. Bob Odenkirk plays Sheriff Ulysses, a battered lawman taking what should’ve been the easiest job of his life in the tiny town of Normal, Minnesota. Naturally, the place turns out to be packed with lunatics, buried secrets, organised crime, and enough oddball behaviour to make you question if everyone’s been drinking paint thinner. One failed bank robbery later and the whole thing spirals into pure chaos. THE PROS Bob Odenkirk remains absurdly watchable. The man could probably read a takeaway menu for two hours and still make it compelling. He brings this exhausted, permanently disappointed energy to Ulysses that works brilliantly with the dark humour. Ben Wheatley directs the violence like he’s genuinely enjoying himself again, and some of the shootouts are nasty, sharp, and weirdly funny in the best way. There’s also a grimy little Coen Brothers vibe lurking underneath it all that gives the film personality instead of feeling like another factory-made streaming action flick. THE CONS It lands at a 7/10 because it never fully figures out what it wants to be. Half the time it’s a deadpan crime thriller, the other half it’s trying to become a deranged small-town comedy, and the tones occasionally crash into each other like shopping trolleys in a car park. Some supporting characters feel undercooked, and the pacing in the middle starts wandering around aimlessly like a bloke who’s lost his dog. It misses the 8/10 mark because for every genuinely brilliant scene, there’s another that feels like the film disappearing up its own backside a bit. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. Messy, violent, strange, and occasionally excellent. It doesn’t always hold together, but there’s enough personality here to separate it from the mountain of forgettable streaming action sludge clogging up the algorithm. Worth watching for Odenkirk alone, who continues to specialise in looking like a man two seconds away from either solving the problem or having a complete nervous breakdown. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Before filming began, Bob Odenkirk and writer Derek Kolstad reportedly rebuilt huge chunks of the dialogue together because they wanted the humour to sound more like exhausted people talking rather than “movie cool” banter.• Ben Wheatley pushed for practical squib effects and real snow locations wherever possible, which is partly why the violence feels so crunchy and cold instead of glossy.• Henry Winkler was apparently cast because Wheatley wanted someone who could look harmless while secretly feeling unsettling underneath.• The original cut screened at TIFF was rumoured to be almost twenty minutes longer and leaned much harder into the mystery elements.• Odenkirk described the role as “Nobody after therapy failed,” which honestly sums the whole thing up beautifully. THE VIBE Like getting trapped in a frozen roadside diner with criminals, burnt coffee, and one sheriff who’s absolutely had enough of everyone’s nonsense.
