Overview

Sam, a seemingly poised and glamorous real estate agent in a small mountain community, is revealed to be an unhinged and troubled alcoholic with a dark secret, when a charismatic man named Peter shows up in town one day. As she tries to keep her life from unravelling, an older co-worker named Brenda is targeted by Peter for information at the behest of his powerful and shadowy boss, Mr. Lock.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 3/10 THE SUMMARY Kevin Spacey attempts a comeback in this low-budget, indie noir thriller that feels like it was filmed in a different decade. Spacey plays Peter, a charismatic and mysterious man in black who arrives in a quiet mountain community to find Sam (Jet Jandreau), a real estate agent who is secretly a spiraling alcoholic with a dark past. As Peter charms his way into the local social circle, it becomes clear he’s a hitman sent by a shadowy boss to make Sam pay for a hit-and-run death. It’s a strange, uneven mix of a character study and a revenge plot that struggles to find its footing. THE PROS The only real winner here is Kevin Spacey, who provides a high-quality performance that feels like it belongs in a much better movie. He brings a sincere level of charm and menace to Peter, especially in the bar scenes where he leans into a theatrical, old-school energy. Rebecca De Mornay is an honest-to-god treat to see on screen again, offering a touch of class to the production. The mountain locations are high-quality and provide a scenic backdrop that occasionally makes the film look better than its budget suggests. It’s a total shout for those who want to see Spacey’s acting chops haven't rusted, but that’s about where the high points end. THE CONS It lands a 3/10 because almost everything outside of the veteran actors is a total letdown. The performance by the female lead is quality-deficient, often feeling wooden or over-the-top, making the central conflict hard to take seriously. The script is a slow-roller in the worst way, filled with dialogue that feels like a rough draft and a plot that relies on massive leaps in logic. The editing and technical side are a struggle, featuring digital blood that looks cheap and continuity errors that are an honest distraction. It misses a higher mark because it feels like a student film with a couple of legends dropped into the middle of it, resulting in a slog that’s more of a frustration than a thriller. THE VERDICT A 3/10. A high-quality performance from Spacey can’t save a film that is an honest mess in almost every other department. It’s a legendary waste of talent that feels amateurish and sluggish. While it might end up as a cult watch for all the wrong reasons, it’s not a banger and certainly doesn't deserve a spot on your "must-watch" list. A quality-deficient effort that is an easy skip for most. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Biblical Roots: The title is a high-quality reference to the Bible verse 1 Peter 5:8, which warns about the devil walking about like a "roaring lion" seeking someone to devour—a nod to Peter’s predatory nature in the film. • Family Connection: To keep things in the family, Sophia DeMornay-O'Neal, the real-life daughter of Rebecca De Mornay, appears in the film as a character named Hana. • Spacey's Return: This was one of the first high-quality projects Kevin Spacey filmed following his legal battles in the UK, with the director stating he hired Spacey simply because he was a legendary actor who fit the role of the charismatic assassin perfectly.
