⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 THE SUMMARY Captain Jack Sparrow finds himself in a race against the Spanish and the British—now led by a privateer Barbossa—to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. After a chaotic escape from London, Jack is shanghaied aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the terrifying ship of the legendary Blackbeard (Ian McShane). He’s reunited with Angelica (Penélope Cruz), a woman from his past who may be his match in both swordplay and deception. To reach the Fountain, they must secure a mermaid’s tear and two silver chalices from a lost ship. It’s a trek through jungles and ancient temples where the price of immortality is someone else’s life, and Jack has to decide if he’s actually ready to live forever. THE PROS Penélope Cruz is a total winner in this, bringing a fiery, sincere energy as Angelica that provides a fresh dynamic for Jack to bounce off of. Ian McShane is quality as Blackbeard; even though he isn’t as supernatural as Davy Jones, he brings a grounded, sinister menace that feels properly dangerous. It’s a 5/10 because the mermaid sequence at Whitecap Bay is epic status—it turns the "beautiful siren" trope on its head and becomes a genuine horror-thriller highlight that is pure quality cinema. Hans Zimmer’s Spanish-influenced score, featuring the guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, is a punchy, standout addition that gives the film a unique vibe compared to the original trilogy. THE CONS It earns a 5/10 because the film feels like a bit of a damp squib without the scale and weirdness of Gore Verbinski’s direction. The absence of Will and Elizabeth leaves a void that the new "romance" between the missionary and the mermaid fails to fill, feeling slightly sluggish and quality-deficient in comparison. Much of that went toward the 3D cameras and the massive logistical challenge of filming in remote locations in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. • Real Ships: Unlike many 2026 films that rely on CGI, Blackbeard’s 'Queen Anne’s Revenge' was a real, functional ship. It was actually the 'Sunset', the same ship used as the Black Pearl in previous movies, given a massive, "skeleton-themed" makeover that looked absolute business in person. THE VIBE Like a trek through a humid jungle with a leaky compass. It smells like tropical flowers, old rum, and stagnant swamp water.
