⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Forget the jungle; the hunt has moved to the sweltering, concrete streets of a near-future Los Angeles. During a record-breaking heatwave and a vicious gang war, Danny Glover’s hard-boiled cop, Mike Harrigan, realizes there’s a new player in town that’s skinning his targets and disappearing into thin air. As the bodies pile up, Harrigan ignores orders from a mysterious government task force to track down the trophy hunter himself. It turns the city into a vertical hunting ground, culminating in a showdown that proves LA is its own kind of wilderness. THE PROS This is a win for having the guts to change the scenery entirely while keeping the tension high. Danny Glover is a total belter as the exhausted, stubborn lead—he’s a completely different vibe from Arnold, which makes the stakes feel more grounded. The expansion of the Predator lore is an absolute win, specifically the look at the ship's trophy room and the introduction of the "Lost Tribe." The subway sequence is a standout moment of pure 90s grit, and the Predator’s new gadgets—like the net gun and the smart disc—are punchy additions that make the creature feel even more lethal. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because it can feel sluggish in the middle as it leans into the "city at war" subplot, which hasn't aged quite as well as the horror elements. Some of the secondary characters are a bit of a head-scratcher and lean into 90s stereotypes that can be a tad distracting. It misses the 9/10 mark because it loses some of the mystery of the first film, trading psychological dread for a more chaotic, urban action vibe, but it’s still a highly recommended cult classic. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a recommendation for anyone who likes their sci-fi with a side of grime. It’s a vault essential for the ending alone, which blew fans' minds and opened up a whole universe of possibilities. Go and watch it for the penthouse massacre and the final respect shown to Harrigan—it’s a belter. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Xenomorph Easter Egg: The trophy room on the Predator ship famously features an Alien (Xenomorph) skull. This was a sincere nod to the Dark Horse comics of the time and was the first time the two franchises were officially linked on screen.• Real Heat: The film was shot during an actual heatwave in LA, and the crew often had to film in some of the city's roughest neighborhoods. Real-life gang members were reportedly paid to act as security for the production.• Heavy Suit: Kevin Peter Hall, the man in the Predator suit, was nearly 7'2". Because the city rooftops were so hot and the suit was so heavy, he could only stay in character for short bursts before needing oxygen. THE VIBE Like a neon-soaked fever dream in a city that’s about to boil over. It smells like hot asphalt, exhaust fumes, and old cigars. It makes you want to stay in the AC, keep your eyes on the skyscrapers, and realize that even in a city of millions, you can still be isolated.
