⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 3/10 THE SUMMARYA psychology student named Mattie (Kristen Bell) watches her boyfriend Josh commit suicide, only to start getting creepy emails and webcam pokes from him shortly after. It turns out Josh accidentally hacked into a "spectral frequency" and let out a bunch of life-sucking ghosts who travel through Wi-Fi. Mattie teams up with Dex (Ian Somerhalder), the guy who bought Josh’s old computer, to try and upload a virus to the afterlife. It’s a 2000s techno-horror remake of the Japanese classic Kairo, but with 100% more blue filters and 100% less existential dread. THE PROSIf you’re a fan of mid-2000s TV royalty, this is a "Guaranteed Banger" for the cast list alone. You’ve got Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) and Damon Salvatore/Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder) trying to fight ghosts with dial-up internet. Somerhalder is peak "smoldering hacker" here, and he and Bell do their best to make the tech-babble sound like Shakespeare. Some of the visuals—like the ghosts appearing in the background of grainy webcams—are legitimately creepy, and the ending is surprisingly bleak for a teen horror movie of that era. THE CONSThe logic in this movie is more disconnected than a 2006 router. The primary defense against these interdimensional soul-suckers is... red duct tape. Apparently, the ghosts can travel through the fiber-optic cables of the universe but are completely stumped by something you can buy at a hardware store for $4. It’s a 3/10 because it takes a haunting, poetic Japanese masterpiece and turns it into a generic "jump scare" factory. The color palette is so aggressively blue and grey you’ll feel like you’re watching the movie through a bottle of Gatorade Cool Blue. THE VERDICTA 3/10. It’s "The Garbage" compared to the original, but it’s a fun "Masterpiece" of 2000s camp if you want to laugh at how we used to think the internet worked. It misses the 9/10 mark by a country mile because it trades atmosphere for cheap thrills. Only watch if you have a deep nostalgia for flip phones and Ian Somerhalder’s jawline. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Despite being set in Ohio, the movie was actually filmed in Romania to keep the budget down. Also, the script was co-written by horror legend Wes Craven, though he later admitted the final product was heavily tinkered with by the studio. Fun fact: This film features a very young Christina Milian as a friend who gets "deleted" early on. Ian Somerhalder was actually filming Lost during this period, and you can tell the producers were desperate to capitalize on his rising heartthrob status—hence the many, many lingering close-ups. THE VIBE Like a computer virus from 2006. It’s annoying, it’s a bit dated, and it makes you want to turn off your Wi-Fi and just go outside for a bit.
