⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY In the year 2045, the real world is a gloomy dump, so everyone spends their time in the OASIS—a massive virtual reality universe where you can be anything and go anywhere. When the creator of the OASIS, James Halliday, dies, he leaves behind an epic challenge: three hidden keys that lead to a literal fortune and total control of the simulation. Wade Watts, a teenager living in the "Stacks," becomes a hero under his avatar name Parzival. He teams up with his mates to find the keys before a ruthless corporation called IOI can turn the OASIS into a pay-to-play nightmare. THE PROS Steven Spielberg is the real winner here; his directing makes the chaotic CGI action feel punchy and easy to follow. The "Shining" sequence is an absolute masterstroke and arguably one of the coolest cinematic homages ever filmed. The film is a total win for nostalgia buffs, packed with so many Easter eggs you’ll need to pause every ten seconds to catch them all. It’s a good movie because it captures the pure, wide-eyed wonder of gaming while delivering a solid message about the importance of the real world. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the romance between Wade and Samantha can feel a bit of a damp squib—it's a bit rushed and lacks the depth of the book's relationship. The dialogue occasionally leans into heavy exposition, which can make the pacing feel slightly sluggish in the real-world scenes. It misses a 9/10 mark because the "corporate villain" trope with Nolan Sorrento is a bit one-dimensional, making him feel like a generic bad guy rather than a genuine threat. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a total recommendation for anyone who grew up with a controller in their hand. It’s a winner for the visual spectacle alone.
