Overview

Between the events of 'Saw' and 'Saw II', a sick and desperate John Kramer travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer, only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Desperate for a miracle, a cancer-stricken John Kramer travels to Mexico for a risky experimental procedure. When he realizes the entire operation is a cruel scam designed to prey on the dying, the "Jigsaw" persona comes out of retirement with a vengeance. Trapping the con artists in a gauntlet of personalized, gore-soaked mechanical tests, John and his apprentice Amanda show the scammers that while they might play with people's lives, Jigsaw plays for keeps. It’s a rare horror entry that puts the villain in the protagonist's seat, making us root for the man behind the mask. THE PROS This film is a absolute win for the franchise, serving as a celebratory explosion of what made the original series great. Tobin Bell is a total belter, giving his most sincere and emotional performance to date; seeing John Kramer’s vulnerability before he turns into a tactical mastermind is a masterstroke. The traps are a sincere return to the "low-tech" grit of the early films, feeling grounded and visceral rather than over-the-top. It’s a good movie because it finally treats Jigsaw as a three-dimensional human being, making the eventual carnage feel earned and—dare I say—justified. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the middle act, while highly recommended for the gore-hounds, can feel a tad like a repetitive "greatest hits" reel of traps. The timeline is a bit of a head-scratcher if you think too hard about the actors' ages, as this is a mid-sequel set shortly after the first film. It misses the 9/10 status because the finale, while punchy, relies on a sincere amount of plot convenience to get everyone in the right place. It’s a belter of a comeback, but it still stays firmly within the "torture-horror" lane without quite reaching epic status. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a sincere recommendation for anyone who thought this franchise had run out of steam. It is a vault essential for horror fans and easily the best sequel in the entire series.
