⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Twenty-five years after the original streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begun targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. Sam Carpenter returns home to protect her sister, Tara, but soon realizes she needs the expertise of those who survived the original bloodbath. Dewey, Gale, and Sidney are pulled back into the nightmare to help unmask a killer who is playing by the "requel" rules—where the legacy characters are the bait and the new generation is the hook. THE PROS This entry is an absolute win for its brutal, visceral kills that bring a sincere sense of danger back to the franchise. The opening sequence with Jenna Ortega is a total belter, delivering a high-tension sequence that pays homage to the original while standing on its own. The "requel" meta-commentary is a celebratory explosion of wit, perfectly skewering toxic fandom and the modern obsession with legacy sequels. It’s a good movie because it successfully passes the torch to a charismatic new cast while giving the original trio a sincere, impactful role that doesn't feel like mere fan service. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the "vision" subplot involving a character from the past is a bit of a head-scratcher and can feel a tad cheesy compared to the grounded grit of the rest of the film. While highly recommended, some of the supporting characters feel a sincere bit like cardboard cutouts waiting for their turn on the knife. It misses the 9/10 status because the motive, while incredibly clever and topical, lacks the raw emotional gut-punch found in the very best entries of the series. The directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, were so nervous about taking over that they wrote a sincere letter to Neve Campbell explaining how much Craven’s work meant to them to convince her to return. • Shorthand Title: Although everyone calls it "Scream 5," the producers insisted on just calling it "Scream" to reflect the "requel" trend they were mocking, where sequels share the exact same name as the original. • For Wes: During the party scene at the end, several characters toast "To Wes." This was a sincere, unscripted tribute to Wes Craven from the cast and crew, many of whom grew up idolizing his work. THE VIBE Like a shiny new knife in a familiar hand. It smells like overpriced hoodies, hospital hallways, and a hint of nostalgia.
