⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Directed by the legendary Sam Raimi, this is a dark, twisted survival thriller that feels like Cast Away met Evil Dead and had a very messy breakup. Linda (Rachel McAdams), an overworked employee, and her arrogant, trust-fund boss Bradley (Dylan O'Brien) are the only survivors of a plane crash on a remote island. At first, it looks like a standard survival flick, but it quickly spirals into a sadistic, psychological battle of wills. It turns out being stranded with someone you hate is way more dangerous than the lack of fresh water, especially when past grievances start bubbling up in the tropical heat. THE PROS Rachel McAdams is absolutely terrifying as Linda, shedding her "nice girl" image to play a character who is as cunning as she is unhinged. Dylan O'Brien is equally great as the punchable CEO who slowly realizes he’s way out of his depth. It’s an 8/10 because Sam Raimi’s signature style is all over this; the camera work is frantic and the "gross-out" moments are executed with that classic, campy horror energy. The practical effects used for the survival elements—and the more violent encounters—are top-tier and feel incredibly honest. The first part of the movie sets up a mystery that keeps you guessing, and the shift from "survival drama" to "psychological horror" is handled with a wicked sense of humor that lands every time. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the middle part can feel a bit repetitive as the two leads go back and forth with their mind games, slowing down the momentum. The script leans quite heavily on some convenient plot armor to keep both characters alive long enough for the final part of the film. It misses a higher mark because the ending might be a bit too "out there" for people who were expecting a more grounded survival story. At 113 minutes, there are a few scenes of island wandering that could have been trimmed to make the pacing feel even tighter. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A sadistic, hilariously dark return to form for Sam Raimi that proves he hasn't lost his edge. It’s a winner for anyone who likes their thrillers with a side of gore and a heavy dose of irony. Not quite "epic status" for a 9, but it's easily the best "trapped on an island" movie we've had in years. If you’ve ever wanted to see a corporate HR nightmare turn into a literal bloodbath, this is the one for you. Anticipated for horror fans, it delivers exactly the kind of madness you'd expect from the man who gave us Ash Williams. THE VIBE Like a luxury vacation gone horribly wrong. It smells like coconut sunscreen, salt spray, and the metallic scent of a rusty pocketknife.
