⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Joan Huang (Shirley Chen) is a Chinese-American teenager in Texas who is tired of being the "invisible" immigrant. She has one goal: become Prom Queen. The problem? Every photo of a past queen in the hallway looks like a Barbie doll. After being mocked by the popular crowd, Joan discovers "Ethnos," a shadowy clinic offering a permanent, experimental surgery that literally remakes you into a white person. She goes under the knife and wakes up as "Jo Hunt" (Mckenna Grace), a blonde-haired, blue-eyed version of herself. It’s a "be careful what you wish for" story where the cost of fitting in is the literal erasure of your own face. THE PROS This is a "Guaranteed Banger" for fans of "Elevated Horror." Writer-director Amy Wang takes the DNA of Mean Girls and splices it with the body-horror of The Substance. Shirley Chen is fantastic as the vulnerable Joan, and Mckenna Grace does a great job playing the "new" Joan who slowly realizes she’s lost her soul along with her heritage. The satirical bite is sharp—especially the scenes showing how the world suddenly opens its doors for "Jo" in ways it never did for Joan. The body-horror elements in the final act, when the surgery starts to... well, fail, are genuinely gnarly and uncomfortable to watch. THE CONS It’s about as subtle as a brick to the face. The racial commentary is blunt, and some of the "white people" characters are such cartoonish stereotypes that it undercuts the reality of the immigrant experience. The logic of the surgery is also pretty flimsy—you just have to roll with the "sci-fi" of it all. It’s a 7/10 because while the concept is a 10, the execution feels like a slightly less clever version of Get Out. It often chooses shock value over deep character development, making the middle section feel like a standard teen melodrama with more blood than usual. THE VERDICT A 7/10. It’s a bold, "in-your-face" debut that is going to spark a million dinner-table arguments. It’s "The Business" if you want a horror movie that actually has something to say about the American Dream, but it might be a bit too "on the nose" for those who prefer their metaphors with a bit more mystery. One thing's for sure: you'll never look at a prom photo the same way again. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Amy Wang won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW for this film, drawing heavily from her own life as a Chinese-Australian woman trying to navigate Western beauty standards. Also, the clinic's name, "Ethnos," actually comes from the Greek word for "nation" or "people." Fun fact: The "Ethnos" doctor who performs the surgery is actually a person of color who used the procedure on himself, which adds a whole extra layer of "self-hate" tragedy to the plot. THE VIBE Like a high-end beauty mask that won't come off. It feels refreshing at first, then it starts to itch, and by the end, you’re just screaming at the mirror.
