⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Spectre sees Bond receiving a cryptic message from his past that sends him on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he uncovers the existence of a sinister global organisation. As M battles political forces back in London to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of a conspiracy that links every villain he’s faced since Casino Royale. It is a stylish, grand-scale spy epic that tries to marry the gritty realism of the Craig era with the flamboyant, world-dominating tropes of the classic 1960s films. THE PROS The opening "Day of the Dead" sequence in Mexico City is a win of technical filmmaking—a long, seamless tracking shot that leads into a heart-stopping helicopter brawl over a crowded square. Visually, the film is a celebratory explosion of luxury; the cinematography in the moonlit car chase through Rome is a total belter. Dave Bautista’s Mr. Hinx is a sincere throwback to the classic "unstoppable henchman" archetype, providing some of the most brutal and tactile fight scenes in the series. It’s an ambitious film that attempts to give Bond a definitive origin story for his greatest enemy. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because it suffers from a bit of a Languid Burn in the second half. The attempt to tie all previous Craig villains into one "grand plan" feels a bit like a head-scratcher and a tad forced, rather than a natural revelation. Christoph Waltz is a brilliant actor, but his version of Blofeld is a bit wet compared to the menace he usually brings to roles—he spends more time monologuing in high-tech rooms than being a genuine threat. It misses the 9/10 status because it loses the tight, emotional focus of Skyfall in favour of a more sprawling, slightly disjointed plot. THE VERDICT An 8/10. This is a good film and a respectable entry that delivers all the glamour and gadgets you want from a Bond flick. It’s a vault essential for the visuals alone, even if the story doesn't quite stick the landing. Go and watch it for the sheer scale and the classic Bond vibes—it’s a sincere piece of entertainment that looks a million dollars, even when the logic gets a bit wonky. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Record Breaker: The explosion at the desert base in Morocco was officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest film stunt explosion ever, using 8,418 litres of fuel and 33kg of explosives.• Heavy Lifting: During the filming of the Austrian plane chase, Daniel Craig suffered a serious knee injury that required surgery; he pushed through the rest of the shoot wearing a brace under his trousers to avoid delaying production.• Coded Suit: Bond’s white dinner jacket in the Morocco scenes was a direct nod to Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca and Sean Connery’s iconic look in Goldfinger, marking a return to the classic "gentleman spy" aesthetic. THE VIBE Like a high-stakes poker game in a mountain-top lair. It smells like expensive leather, desert heat, and a martini that’s perhaps a bit too cold.
