⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY The saga kicks off not with a bang, but with a trade dispute. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi are dispatched to settle a blockade on the planet Naboo. After a daring escape with Queen Amidala, they find themselves stranded on the desert world of Tatooine, where they discover a young slave boy named Anakin Skywalker who is unnervingly strong with the Force. Throw in a high-stakes podrace, a clumsy Gungan named Jar Jar Binks, and a silent, double-bladed Sith apprentice named Darth Maul, and you’ve got the opening gambit for the fall of the Republic. THE PROS The "Duel of the Fates" is an absolute win; the final three-way lightsaber battle is a total belter and remains one of the best-choreographed fights in cinematic history. Ray Park’s physical presence as Darth Maul is a celebratory explosion of menace, proving you don't need a lot of dialogue to be iconic. Liam Neeson brings a sincere, grounding gravitas to the Jedi Order, making Qui-Gon feel like a true maverick. The Podrace sequence is the business for sound design and pure adrenaline, and John Williams delivers a score that is nothing short of an epic masterpiece. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the focus on galactic taxes and political bureaucracy is a bit of a head-scratcher for a film aimed at kids. Jar Jar Binks is a sincere test of patience for anyone over the age of eight, and some of the child acting feels a tad wooden compared to the high-stakes drama happening around it. It misses the 8/10 mark because the pacing is a bit erratic—shifting from dry Senate meetings to cartoonish slapstick—making it feel like a film unsure of its own identity. It’s decent, but it definitely prioritizes world-building over a tight, character-driven narrative. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and a sincere recommendation for the spectacle alone, especially if you can look past the Gungan antics. It is a vault essential for the lore, introducing the boy who would become Vader. Go and watch it for the Maul fight and the podracing—it’s the business for seeing how the galaxy began to crumble. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Communicator Secret: Qui-Gon Jinn’s "Jedi Communicator" was actually a resin cast made from a Gillette Sensor Excel women's razor. • Sound of the Engines: To create the unique roar of the podracers, the sound team recorded a variety of high-performance vehicles, including a Porsche and an electric toothbrush, blending them to give each racer a distinct personality. • Massive Wardrobe: The costume department spent a sincere amount of time on Queen Amidala’s outfits; the "Throne Room" gown alone took nearly two months to construct and was so heavy Natalie Portman had to sit on a bicycle seat hidden under the skirts between takes. THE VIBE Like a shiny new toy that’s a bit over-engineered. It smells like desert dust, fresh engine oil, and expensive silk. It makes you want to win a race for your freedom, question the Jedi Council’s wisdom, and realize that even the smallest person can cast a very long shadow.
