Overview

Andy Stitzer has a pleasant life with a nice apartment and a job stamping invoices at an electronics store. But at age 40, there's one thing Andy hasn't done, and it's really bothering his sex-obsessed male co-workers: Andy is still a virgin. Determined to help Andy get laid, the guys make it their mission to de-virginize him. But it all seems hopeless until Andy meets small business owner Trish, a single mom.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY A hilariously awkward comedy about Andy Stitzer, a quiet forty-year-old bloke who spends his free time playing video games, painting tiny toy figures, and meticulously maintaining his massive collection of vintage action figures. He has a perfectly comfortable life until his rowdy electronics store coworkers discover he has never actually done the deed. Determined to break his streak, the lads take it upon themselves to drag Andy into the modern dating pool, resulting in a disastrous sequence of speed dating, clubbing, and an infamous chest-waxing session before he meets a lovely single mum named Trish. THE PROS Steve Carell is phenomenal, playing Andy with a sweet, endearing vulnerability that stops the movie from turning into a mean-spirited joke. The improvisational chemistry between the main cast members is spectacular, with Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, and Romany Malco firing off rapid-fire, ridiculous insults that feel entirely unscripted. It balances the crude, laugh-out-loud locker room humor with a genuine amount of real heart, making Andy's romance with Trish feel completely earned and sweet rather than just a crude punchline. THE CONS At over two hours, the pacing stretches thin for a studio comedy, and a few of the extended improvisational riffs go on a bit too long without pushing the actual plot forward. Some of the early 2000s lad-culture gags and casual insults have aged a bit poorly and might make you wince slightly today. THE VERDICT A great 8/10. It is a defining piece of 2000s comedy that effectively launched Steve Carell's movie career and set a new standard for Hollywood humoresques. It easily hits an 8 because it manages to take a highly ridiculous, potentially offensive premise and turn it into something genuinely heartwarming and flat-out hysterical. A brilliant choice for a weekend watch if you want a massive laugh with a bit of real substance. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Real Pain: The legendary chest-waxing scene was completely unscripted and filmed live in one take because Steve Carell insisted on actually getting his chest hair ripped off to make his agonizing screams and hilarious reactions entirely authentic.• Casting Shuffle: Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd were so committed to helping their mate Steve Carell get the movie made that they both agreed to take massive pay cuts just to ensure the studio had enough budget to clear production.• Hidden Talent: The closing musical number where the entire cast sings "Age of Aquarius" on a grassy hill was completely improvised on set after director Judd Apatow realized they needed a big, feel-good ending to wrap up Andy's journey. THE VIBE Like sitting around a crowded pub table with your loudest mates after five pints, listening to someone tell a deeply embarrassing story while everyone roars with laughter. It smells like stale lager, carpet cleaner, old cardboard boxes, and cheap body spray. Hilarious, chaotic, and surprisingly sweet.
