Overview

Siblings Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter step through a magical wardrobe and find the land of Narnia. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY If you are looking for the definition of "pure magic," this is where it lives. During the Blitz, four siblings are sent to a grand country house where they discover a wardrobe that acts as a portal to Narnia—a land frozen in eternal winter by the White Witch. It is a classic tale of betrayal, sacrifice, and destiny as the children join forces with the Great Lion, Aslan, to break the curse and reclaim the throne. It is a masterfully handled adaptation that captures the heart of C.S. Lewis’s world without losing the grit of the war-torn era it begins in. THE PROS Tilda Swinton as the White Witch is the absolute business; she is cold, ethereal, and genuinely terrifying without ever needing to raise her voice. The transformation of the Pevensie children from scared evacuees to High Kings and Queens is a sincere emotional journey that anchors the whole film. The creature designs—from Mr. Tumnus to the talking wolves—are a absolute win, blending practical prosthetics and CGI in a way that still feels tactile and real. It is a celebratory explosion of fantasy that manages to feel epic and intimate at the same time, delivering a final battle that is a total belter. THE CONS It earns a 9/10 because, while it is an outstanding film, some of the very early CGI on Aslan and the larger battle animals can look a bit wet and soft in high definition today. The pacing in the first act is a bit of a Languid Burn as it sets up the rules of the world, which might feel a tad slow for those used to modern, mile-a-minute fantasy. It misses the 10/10 epic status only because it leans quite heavily into its moral allegories, which might feel a bit on the nose for some viewers, but it remains a masterfully crafted masterpiece nonetheless. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Honest Reaction: When Georgie Henley (Lucy) first walks into Narnia, her wide-eyed reaction is 100% real; the director kept her blindfolded until the cameras were rolling so she was seeing the snowy forest and Mr. Tumnus for the very first time.• Lion’s Share: To create Aslan, the effects team built a life-sized, animatronic lion for the actors to interact with, which was so realistic it reportedly made some of the cast feel a bit jumpy during the more emotional scenes.• Casting the Witch: Tilda Swinton originally turned down the role, but she eventually agreed after the director promised her the character would be played as a cold, clinical "Aryan" villain rather than a shouting, pantomime witch.
