⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY A claustrophobic, completely unhinged psychological thriller that plays out like a maritime fever dream. Set on a remote, rock-strewn New England island in the late nineteenth century, the story follows two lighthouse keepers—an old, farting taskmaster named Thomas and his quiet new assistant Ephraim. Tasked with maintaining the station for a four-week shift, the pair are completely marooned when a massive, relentless storm hits. Stuck indoors with nothing but cheap booze and each other's nerves, their sanity completely unravels into a chaotic mess of isolation, hallucinations, and pure cabin fever. THE PROS Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe are absolutely magnificent, screaming at each other with a frantic energy that keeps you completely glued to the screen. Dafoe delivers some of the most intense, pirate-like monologues you will ever hear, while Pattinson’s slow descent into total madness is a proper joy to watch. Shooting the entire thing in a tight, square black-and-white format gives it an incredibly grimy, old-school look that makes the wet rock and crashing waves feel properly cold and miserable. THE CONS It is a deeply weird flick that leans heavily into abstract imagery, mythic sea monsters, and confusing dreams, which will definitely leave you scratching your head if you prefer a straightforward plot. The pacing can feel a touch repetitive in the middle act as the two lads spend a lot of time just drinking, dancing, and screaming before the final, chaotic breakdown actually kicks in. THE VERDICT A great 8/10. It is a stunningly shot, hilarious, and deeply disturbing descent into total isolation that works perfectly as a late-night watch. It comfortably bags an 8 because the acting is top-tier, the dialogue is razor-sharp, and it creates a beautifully grim atmosphere that handles its dark humor perfectly. It only misses out on a higher score because the abstract madness gets a bit too self-indulgent towards the end, but it remains a proper, gripping cinematic trip. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Authentic Winds: Instead of using comfortable studio sets, the production crew built a fully functioning, seventy-foot lighthouse on the rugged coast of Nova Scotia, forcing the actors to battle real, freezing storms and brutal ocean winds during filming.• Vintage Glass: To capture the distinct, haunting look of early twentieth-century cinema, the cinematographer tracked down and utilized original camera lenses from the 1920s and 1930s that hadn't been used in decades.• Kerosene Fuel: Willem Dafoe spent weeks learning the exact, tedious operational mechanics of historical nineteenth-century lighthouses so he could seamlessly handle the heavy kerosene lamps and machinery on camera without looking like an actor. THE VIBE Like being trapped in a damp, freezing cold stone cellar while a foghorn blasts directly outside and the ocean pounds against the walls. It smells like wet wool, spilled gin, rotting fish, and burning whale oil. Grim, wild, and properly mad.
