⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY If the previous films were about large-scale wars for the crown, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a nautical adventure that feels more like a collection of mystical short stories. Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their insufferable cousin Eustace, are sucked into a painting and find themselves on the high seas with King Caspian. Their mission is to find the seven lost lords of Narnia and stop a creeping green mist from swallowing the world. It is a whimsical, episodic journey across uncharted islands, filled with dragons, invisible creatures, and a fair few moral lessons. THE PROS The absolute business here is Will Poulter as Eustace Scrubb; he plays the whiny, bratty cousin so perfectly that his eventual character growth feels genuinely sincere and earned. The visual design of the Dawn Treader itself is a celebratory explosion of craftsmanship—it looks like a magnificent, golden dragon-ship brought to life. The scene where Lucy encounters the Magician's book is a total win for fans of the source material, capturing that specific sense of Narnian wonder. It is a lighter, more magical entry that moves away from the gritty combat of Prince Caspian and back toward the sense of discovery found in the first film. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the overarching plot with the "green mist" feels a bit wet and vague compared to the very real threat of the White Witch. Because the story is so episodic, it can feel like a Languid Burn in places as the crew hops from one island to the next without a strong sense of urgency. The CGI, particularly for some of the sea creatures and the "Dark Island," is a bit of a head-scratcher and hasn't aged nearly as well as the effects in the earlier films. It misses the 8/10 mark because it feels a bit more like a high-budget Sunday afternoon telly special than a massive cinematic epic. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Not bad at all, and a decent enough way to spend a couple of hours if you are a fan of C.S. Lewis’s world. It is a respectable adventure that delivers some great moments of wonder, even if it lacks the emotional weight of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Go and watch it to see Will Poulter steal every scene he is in—it is a vault essential for families who want a bit of escapism without the heavy violence of modern fantasy. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Voice Swap: While Liam Neeson returned as the voice of Aslan, the role of Reepicheep the mouse was actually recast; Simon Pegg took over the voice duties from Eddie Izzard, who played the character in the previous film.• High Seas in Australia: Despite the film being set on the open ocean, almost all of the ship-based scenes were filmed at Cape Cleveland in Queensland, Australia, using a massive gimbal to simulate the rocking motion of the waves.• The Giant Book: The "Book of Incantations" used in the film was an enormous, hand-crafted prop that weighed over 30kg—it was so heavy that Georgie Henley (Lucy) often struggled to turn the pages during filming. THE VIBE Like the smell of salt spray and old parchment, the sound of wind in the sails, and the feeling of a sun-drenched adventure. It is magical, moralistic, and slightly eccentric. It makes you want to buy a telescope, be nicer to your siblings, and never, ever trust a painting that looks like it is leaking water.
