Overview

Directed by Lee Daniels, this takes an honest, grit-filled look at a "true story" possession, blending social drama with a high-quality, supernatural banger. THE PROS This earns its 5/10 because the cast is an absolute winner. Andra Day delivers a high-quality, sincere performance that keeps the family struggle feeling honest even when the floorboards start shaking. Glenn Close is absolute quality and a total win as the grandmother; she brings a legendary, scenery-chewing energy that is an honest shout for the most entertaining part of the film. It hits the 5 mark because the first half is a high-quality slow-burner, focusing on the sincere weight of poverty and addiction before the legendary horror elements take over.
