Overview

In 1750 Austria, a deeply religious woman named Agnes has just married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Directed by the duo behind Goodnight Mommy, this is a haunting Austrian folk-horror that trade ghosts for the crushing weight of religious dogma. Set in 1750, Agnes (Anja Plaschg) marries into a rural community and moves into a remote forest cottage with her new husband. Expecting a life of love and purpose, she instead finds a world of grueling labor, a cold spouse, and a mother-in-law from hell. As Agnes slips into a deep "melancholy," she discovers a terrifying historical loophole: since suicide was an unforgivable sin, those desperate to die would commit a capital crime to be executed, allowing them to confess and be saved. It’s a bleak, visceral look at a forgotten corner of history. THE PROS Anja Plaschg is a revelation in the lead role; she delivers a performance that is raw, sincere, and physically exhausting to watch as she slowly unravels.
