⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY In the middle of a catastrophic flood that submerges London, a new mother (Jodie Comer) is forced to flee her home with her newborn baby. As society quickly unravels and food supplies vanish, she embarks on a harrowing journey across a sodden, broken Britain to find safety. It’s a survival story that ignores the typical "end of the world" pyrotechnics, choosing instead to focus on the raw, intimate reality of motherhood and the quiet endurance required to keep a child alive when the world is literally drowning. THE PROS Jodie Comer is a total winner, delivering a high-quality and sincere performance that carries the entire film. She makes every moment of exhaustion and panic feel honest, proving once again she is a legendary talent. The film earns a 7/10 because it’s a refreshing, high-quality take on the apocalypse—it feels grounded and human rather than like a generic action flick. Joel Fry and Katherine Waterston provide absolute quality support, and a brief, legendary appearance by Benedict Cumberbatch adds a sincere emotional punch. It hits the 7 mark because the cinematography is stunning, capturing a submerged England that looks both beautiful and terrifying. It’s a total shout for those who prefer their survival stories with a bit of poetic depth. THE CONS It lands a 7/10 because the pacing is a deliberate slow-roller that might frustrate those looking for more urgency. The narrative is a bit episodic, feeling like a series of high-quality snapshots rather than a driving, focused plot. While the atmosphere is legendary, some of the supporting characters feel a touch quality-deficient in terms of development, appearing and disappearing before we can really connect with them. It misses a higher mark because the ending feels a bit safe, lacking the "epic status" impact that the early tension promised. It’s an honest and beautiful film, but a bit too quiet to be a banger for everyone. THE VERDICT A 7/10. A high-quality, sincere, and beautifully acted survival drama that is a winner for fans of Jodie Comer. While it’s a bit of a slow-burn sit, it offers an honest and unique perspective on the end of the world. A quality shout that swaps explosions for the legendary power of a mother’s instinct. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Newborn Magic: To keep the scenes honest and high-quality, the production used 15 different babies to play the role of "Z" at various stages of the journey. Jodie Comer spent a legendary amount of time learning how to handle them naturally so her performance felt sincere.• Practical Water: Instead of relying on CGI, the production used high-quality practical effects and real locations to simulate the flooding. This meant the cast was often genuinely damp and cold, which helped maintain a legendary level of realism on set.• Book to Screen: The film is a high-quality adaptation of Megan Hunter’s acclaimed novella. To stay honest to the source material, the script kept the focus on the internal journey and the sensory experience of the environment rather than expanding it into a traditional Hollywood disaster movie. THE VIBE Like the sound of rain on a tent that’s starting to leak. It smells of damp wool, river silt, and the metallic tang of a cold tin of milk.
