⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Death heads to the racetrack in this fourth installment. Nick has a premonition of a massive pile-up that sends burning engines and tires flying into the stands, and he manages to drag his mates out just before the stadium becomes a graveyard. But as the survivors start getting picked off in increasingly ridiculous accidents—including a very aggressive salon chair and a rogue swimming pool drain—Nick has to figure out how to break the cycle before the credits roll. It’s the first one filmed in 3D, and it really, really wants you to know that by throwing things at the screen every five minutes. THE PROS This is a win if you just want some mindless, gory fun without any heavy thinking. The opening car crash is a celebratory explosion of carnage that starts the movie on a punchy note. It’s a decent watch because it doesn't take itself seriously at all; it’s more of a "funhouse" horror movie than a gritty thriller. Some of the kills, like the car wash sequence, are absolute belters of suspense that make you look at everyday objects with a sincere bit of suspicion. It’s a good movie for a rowdy night with mates where you just want to see some creative, over-the-top special effects. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because the CGI is a sincere bit of a head-scratcher—since it was made for the 3D gimmick, a lot of the blood and debris looks like it belongs in a video game rather than a movie. The characters are a bit of a damp squib; they’re mostly just cardboard cutouts waiting for their turn to die, making it hard to feel a sincere bit of worry for them. The pacing can feel sluggish in the middle when it tries to do a "vision" subplot that we've seen three times before. It misses the 7/10 mark because it lacks the cleverness or the "epic status" twists that the other sequels managed to pull off. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Bad if you want a deep story, but a recommendation if you just want to see people get taken out by lawnmowers. It’s not exactly a vault essential, but it’s a belter of a popcorn flick for a one-time watch. Go and watch it for the escalator scene—it’ll make you take the stairs for at least a week. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • 3D First: This was the first film in the series to be shot in HD 3D. The filmmakers were so obsessed with the tech that they had to constantly clean the camera lenses because the "fake blood" kept splashing onto the expensive gear.• Alternative Deaths: Like many films in the series, several different "kills" were filmed. One involved a character being crushed by a falling ambulance, but it was binned because the producers thought it looked too "cartoonish" even for this movie.• X-Ray Vision: The opening credits feature X-ray versions of all the iconic kills from the first three movies. It was a celebratory explosion of nostalgia for the fans, showing exactly how the previous survivors met their ends. THE VIBE Like a trip to a dodgy theme park where the safety bars don't click shut. It smells like burnt rubber, popcorn, and cheap CGI. It makes you want to avoid public pools, stay away from racetracks, and realize that 3D glasses can't save you from a bad script.
