⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY We’re heading back to World War I for this origin story, where Ralph Fiennes plays the Duke of Oxford, a posh pacifist who’s trying to keep his son out of the trenches. It turns out a shadowy cabal of history’s worst tyrants is pulling the strings of the war, so Oxford has to assemble a small team of his household staff to take them down. It’s a weird mix of a serious war drama and the usual over-the-top gadgetry, featuring a very horny Rasputin and a plot to save the British Empire from a Scottish mastermind. THE PROS This is a win for anyone who loves a bit of "alternative history" madness. Ralph Fiennes is a total belter as Oxford; he brings a sincere bit of class to the role and handles the action scenes like a pro. The fight against Rasputin is epic status—it’s a celebratory explosion of "dance-fighting" that is easily the funniest and most inventive part of the movie. Rhys Ifans is clearly having the time of his life as the Mad Monk. It’s a decent watch because it takes some big, bizarre swings that you just don't see in other blockbusters, like having Tom Hollander play three different European kings. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because it’s a bit of a tonal mess—one minute it’s a heartbreaking scene in the mud of No Man’s Land, and the next it’s a mountain goat being used as a weapon. The pacing can feel sluggish in the middle act while it tries to explain the complicated politics of the war, which is a bit of a head-scratcher when you just want more spy action. It misses the 8/10 mark because it loses that "street-smart" energy that made the first movie so punchy, but it’s still a good movie for a quiet night in. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and a recommendation for fans who want to know how the tailor shop started. It’s a vault essential for the Rasputin fight alone, even if the rest of the film doesn't quite reach that high. Go and watch it for the "ballet" choreography and the surprising twist in the trenches—it’s a belter of a weird time. It’s a clever nod to the fact that the three leaders were actually cousins who looked incredibly similar in real life.• The Goat Stunt: The scene where Ralph Fiennes’ character has a run-in with a mountain goat wasn't just CGI—they actually had a mechanical goat rig for him to interact with to make the physical comedy work.• Real History: Many of the "villains" in the cabal, from Gavrilo Princip to Mata Hari and Lenin, were real historical figures involved in the era's chaos, though the movie obviously takes a sincere amount of creative liberty with their motivations. THE VIBE Like a history textbook that someone has doodled all over with felt-tip pens. It smells like old wool, gunpowder, and expensive tea. It makes you want to check the family tree for royal scandals, buy a trench coat, and realize that some monks are much harder to kill than others.
