Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY If the first film was a perfect introduction, The Mummy Returns is the high-octane sequel that turns everything up to eleven. Set eight years after the original, Rick and Evie are now married with a precocious son, Alex, who accidentally gets a cursed bracelet stuck on his wrist. They have to race across Egypt to the lost city of Ahm Shere before the Scorpion King wakes up and brings a literal army of Anubis warriors with him. It is a non-stop, globetrotting adventure that leans heavily into the pulp-action fun that made the franchise famous. THE PROS The chemistry between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is still the absolute heartbeat of the film; they are arguably one of the best cinematic couples ever. Arnold Vosloo returns as Imhotep and manages to make a bald, centuries-old priest surprisingly sympathetic again. The action set-pieces, like the double-decker bus chase through the streets of London and the battle in the golden forest, are fantastic fun and full of that classic adventure spirit. It is a celebratory explosion of early 2000s blockbusters that doesn't take itself too seriously but still delivers on the stakes. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because, let’s be honest, the CGI for the Scorpion King at the end is a bit of a head-scratcher. Even for the time, it looked a little like a half-finished video game character, which takes away from the tension of the final fight. The plot is also incredibly fast-paced—almost too fast—to the point where some of the logic gets tossed out the window in favour of another explosion or narrow escape. It is a bit of a Languid Burn-reverser; it moves so quickly you barely have time to breathe, which might feel a bit exhausting for some. THE VERDICT An 8/10. It is a genuine, fun-filled belter that is the perfect popcorn movie for a Saturday night. While it doesn't quite have the tight script of the first movie, it more than makes up for it with sheer scale and charisma. It is a vault essential for anyone who loves a good old-fashioned treasure hunt with plenty of monsters and witty banter. Go and watch it if you want to see Brendan Fraser at the absolute top of his game. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Wrestling Debut: This film famously marked the big-screen acting debut of Dwayne The Rock Johnson, though he spent most of the movie as a digital creation rather than his actual physical self.• Real Injuries: Brendan Fraser was a total trooper during filming, suffering a torn spinal disc, cracked ribs, and broken knees due to the intense stunt work he insisted on doing himself.• Pyramids in England: While much of the film looks like the Egyptian desert, the interior of the O'Connells' London house was actually filmed at Luton Hoo, a stately home in Bedfordshire. THE VIBE Like a dusty leather journal, the smell of gunpowder and ancient incense, and the thrill of a race against the sun. It is loud, heroic, and incredibly nostalgic. It makes you want to buy a dirigible, learn ancient Egyptian, and never touch a golden bracelet you find in a chest.
