⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Dani Moonstar is the sole survivor of a freak "tornado" that wipes out her reservation. She wakes up in a creepy, isolated hospital run by Dr. Reyes, who tells her she’s a mutant and needs to stay until she can control her powers. She joins four other teens—including a girl who turns into a wolf and a lad who can blast off like a rocket. But this isn't Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters; it’s a psychiatric ward where their worst nightmares start becoming physical threats. As the "Demon Bear" closes in, the group has to stop bickering and use their powers to break out before they’re "liquidated." THE PROS Anya Taylor-Joy is a total win as Illyana Rasputin; she brings a sharp, mean-girl edge that’s actually quality, and her "Soulsword" looks epic when it finally comes out. The horror-tinged vibe is a punchy departure from the usual X-Men formula, making it a decent watch if you want something a bit darker. Maisie Williams and Blu Hunt have a sincere chemistry that provides the emotional core the movie needs. It’s a winner for the final act battle against the Demon Bear, which is some of the most creative visual work in the Fox-era mutant movies. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because it’s clearly a movie that’s been edited to death, leading to a plot that can feel slightly sluggish and disjointed in the middle. The "scary" elements are a bit of a damp squib for hardcore horror fans—it’s more "creepy teen drama" than actual nightmare fuel.
