Overview

Fresh out of rehab, Rona returns to the Orkney Islands—a place both wild and beautiful, right off the Scottish coast. Now 29 and after more than a decade of living life on the edge in London, where she both found and lost love, Rona attempts to come to terms with her troubled past. As she reconnects with the dramatic landscape where she grew up, memories of her traumatic childhood merge with more recent challenging events that have set her on the path to recovery.

Seeking a fresh start, she returns to the wild, windswept Orkney Islands in Scotland where she grew up. Staying with her separated parents—a father living with bipolar disorder and a mother who has turned to extreme religion—Rona tries to piece herself back together. It’s a raw, non-linear look at recovery, using the isolated beauty of the islands as a backdrop for her internal battle to stay sober. THE PROS Saoirse Ronan is absolutely magnetic here. She puts in a gritty, fearless performance that carries the entire film, showing the ugly reality of addiction without any Hollywood gloss.
