⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, and great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing. When Theo’s career as an architect nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions as a restaurateur take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. This reimagining of the 1989 classic The War of the Roses follows the couple as their suburban bliss devolves into a savage, all-out war where the house is the prize and no blow is too low. THE PROS Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch are absolute business here; their chemistry is electric, and watching two of the best in the game descend into pure, unadulterated hatred is a joy to behold. The script by Tony McNamara (The Favourite) is a winner, packed with sharp, witty insults and the kind of creative swearing that feels both shocking and hilarious. It’s an 8/10 because the first part of the movie does a fantastic job of building the relationship, so the eventual breakdown feels earned and grounded in real resentment. Allison Janney steals every scene she’s in as a ruthless divorce lawyer, and Jay Roach’s direction keeps the energy high and the tone perfectly dark. The escalation of the "war" is gripping, moving from petty bickering to genuine property destruction with a wicked sense of glee. THE CONS It lands an 8/10 because the middle part can feel a bit sluggish as the couple trades minor barbs before the real fireworks start in the final part. The marketing spoiled a few of the best lines in the trailer, which takes away some of the punch when they finally land in the film. It misses a higher mark because some of the supporting characters, like the kids, feel a bit like background noise compared to the massive screen presence of the two leads. While the "war" is epic status, the shift from grounded marital drama to cartoonish violence might be a bit jarring for those expecting a more traditional dramedy. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A savage, hilariously dark portrait of a marriage in total meltdown that proves Colman and Cumberbatch are a powerhouse duo. It’s a sincere and gripping reimagining that manages to feel modern while keeping the mean-spirited heart of the original. While it doesn't quite hit the legendary 9/10 status, it’s a top-tier choice for anyone who likes their comedy with a black heart and a lot of broken china. Just maybe don't watch it on a first date.
