⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARYA sleek, slow-burning neo-noir crime thriller that takes a fascinatingly quiet approach to a high-stakes heist story. The film follows Niki White, a brilliant young former pianist whose musical career was completely derailed by hyperacusis—a rare hearing condition that makes everyday city sounds overwhelmingly loud and physically painful. While working quietly across New York servicing elite pianos alongside his aging mentor Harry, Niki accidentally walks into a high-end burglary. When he realizes his hyper-sensitive hearing allows him to perfectly hear the inner tumblers of a mechanical safe falling into place, he is quickly lured into a dangerous criminal underbelly to help cover his mentor's massive medical bills. THE PROSThe breakout star Leo Woodall is absolutely brilliant as Niki, perfectly capturing the intense, anxious focus of a man who is constantly overwhelmed by the noisy world around him. Stepping away from documentaries, director Daniel Roher does a fantastic job building tension through sheer audio design, using dead silence and muffled clicks to make the safecracking scenes feel incredibly sweaty and intense. Dustin Hoffman brings a massive amount of genuine warmth and old-school charm to the screen as Niki's seasoned father-figure mentor, providing the film with a proper emotional heartbeat. THE CONSThe central romance between Niki and a young composition student named Ruthie feels incredibly underwritten, lacking any real spark or narrative urgency to make you care about their relationship. While the acoustic tension is masterclass early on, the plot relies on a few overly familiar crime cliches in the second half that pull the unique premise back down to earth. A sudden, violent escalation involving an underground security firm feels a touch jarring compared to the sophisticated, slow-paced atmosphere of the earlier acts. THE VERDICTA solid 7/10. It is a smart, atmospheric, and incredibly well-crafted thriller that relies on clever soundscapes rather than loud explosions to deliver its suspense. It comfortably secures a 7 because Leo Woodall’s performance is properly gripping and the unique audio-driven safecracking sequences provide a fantastic twist on the classic heist formula.
