⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY This high-octane sequel to the 1996 classic swaps the original crew for a new generation of storm chasers. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kate, a former meteorologist haunted by a tragic encounter with a tornado who is lured back to the plains of Oklahoma by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos). They’re testing a groundbreaking new system to "tame" tornadoes, but they soon clash with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), a swaggering, social-media "Tornado Wrangler" who chases storms for views and glory. As a record-breaking storm season converges on them, the competing teams have to put their egos aside to survive a weather phenomenon the world has never seen before. THE PROS Glen Powell is fantastic, bringing a massive amount of charisma that makes his "cowboy" persona feel genuinely fun rather than annoying. Daisy Edgar-Jones delivers a sincere performance, grounding the movie’s more chaotic moments with an emotional weight that makes you actually care about her survival. It’s an 8/10 because the direction by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) focuses on the raw power of nature, using incredible practical effects—like actual jet engines and high-pressure water cannons—to make the wind feel tactile and dangerous. The cinematography captures the beauty and terror of the American heartland perfectly, making the vast skies feel like their own character. The first part of the movie sets a breakneck pace, and the chemistry between the leads keeps the momentum high even when the storms aren't on screen. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the middle part is quite sluggish, with a few too many scenes of the teams bickering at gas stations that slow the story down. Some of the logic regarding "stopping" a tornado with chemicals is a bit of a stretch, even for a disaster movie, and requires a fair amount of suspension of disbelief. They actually filmed one, but Steven Spielberg (the executive producer) suggested cutting it to keep the focus on the characters' shared passion for the storm rather than a cliché romance.• NYC Illusion: Despite scenes taking place in New York City, the entire movie was actually filmed in Oklahoma. Downtown Oklahoma City was dressed up with yellow taxis and NYC street signs to double for Manhattan. THE VIBE Like a hot summer breeze before a storm.
