Undertone (2026) Rating: 5/10 A24 is at it again, trying to convince us that the sound of a creaky floorboard and a hum from a 1990s refrigerator is "high-concept horror." ️ THE SUMMARY Undertone follows Evy, a paranormal podcaster who spends her days caring for her comatose mother and her nights listening to creepy audio tapes sent by an anonymous tipster. It’s basically a "found footage" movie for people who are too tired to actually look at the screen. THE PROS The sound design is genuinely unsettling—making you want to pause the movie just to make sure that scratching sound isn't coming from your hallway. Nina Kiri does a great job playing "exhausted and terrified," carrying the weight of a film where she’s essentially the only person on screen. The ending is also genuinely stomach-churning, which saves it from being a total wash. THE CONS The script is about as thin as the tape it’s recorded on. There’s only so many times you can watch a character put on headphones, look worried, and then walk slowly toward a dark closet before you start checking your watch. It leans heavily on every horror trope in the book, including the classic (and tired) "creepy reversed nursery rhyme" gimmick. THE VERDICT It’s being marketed as a "modern masterwork," but it feels more like a very expensive ASMR video for people who enjoy panic attacks. It hits a 5/10—it’s atmospheric but lacks the substance to be a classic. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA The film is almost a one-woman show; Nina Kiri is the only consistent on-screen actor, while her co-host Justin (Adam DiMarco) only appears via remote link. Also, the nursery rhyme "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep" is used as a central motif, following a real-life trend of horror movies ruining childhood songs for everyone. THE VIBE Headphone horror. This is the kind of movie you watch at 2 AM when the house is silent, specifically so you can terrify yourself into never sleeping again. Best watched with noise-canceling headphones if you want the full "fridge-hum" experience.
