Overview

Lucas Frost, an honest man brought up in a crime family whose only legacy is violence, tries to make his own life with his fiancée, Emma. He is suddenly pulled back into the family business he so despises when his cousin, Eli, perpetrates an armed robbery on a local scrap yard and an innocent life is caught in the crossfire.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Set in the 1990s Ozarks, Lucas Frost is the "good" son of a notorious Arkansas crime family who has spent his life trying to outrun his pedigree. He’s finally built a straight-edge life with his fiancée, Emma, only for it to be vaporized during a botched robbery involving his own kin. When Emma is murdered, Lucas snaps, ditching his morals to hunt down his cousins Eli and the terrifyingly calm Sid. It’s a gritty, Southern Gothic bloodbath where Lucas’s mother—who happens to be a cop—is caught in the middle of a family drug war between meth-peddling and cocaine-running uncles. THE PROS Billy Magnussen is a total win here; he ditches his usual "goofy" persona for a performance that is punchy, raw, and genuinely heartbreaking. The atmosphere is epic status—the film was shot on location in the Ozarks, and you can practically feel the humidity and the rot of the ramshackle cabins. James Badge Dale as Sid is a winner, bringing a soft-spoken menace that makes your skin crawl. It’s a 7/10 because it feels like a sincere, grounded throwback to 90s neo-noirs like 'A Simple Plan'. The cinematography is quality, capturing the brutal beauty of the Arkansas landscape without making it look like a postcard. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because it leans heavily on the "dead fiancée" trope to kickstart the plot, which feels a bit quality-deficient and tired in 2026. The pacing in the back half can feel slightly sluggish as the story shifts from a personal revenge mission into a broader, more conventional crime thriller.
