⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARYA grim and deeply personal survival thriller that puts a unique, slow-burning twist on the classic zombie apocalypse. Set in the beautiful but empty landscapes of Tasmania, the story follows an American woman named Ava who flies out to a massive quarantine zone after a catastrophic US military experiment leaves half a million people dead. Desperate to find out what happened to her missing husband, she joins a volunteer body retrieval team, only to uncover a terrifying secret: some of the corpses she is bagging are starting to stand back up. THE PROSDaisy Ridley is absolutely superb as Ava, putting in a deeply emotional, quiet performance that perfectly carries the heavy weight of the story. Writer-director Zak Hilditch deserves plenty of praise for trying something totally fresh with the monsters; instead of running around eating brains, these undead start out completely still and silent, building a brilliant, skin-crawling sense of dread. The practical makeup looks fantastic and genuinely unsettling, avoiding the usual messy, over-the-top gore for a much more realistic and chilling look. THE CONSWhile the slow approach to the horror elements works well early on, the pacing drops too much in the middle section and things start to drag. The script relies heavily on a series of predictable dream sequences to fill in Ava's back story, which quickly feels a bit repetitive and stops the main journey in its tracks. A massive, dramatic plot twist in the final third completely changes the rules of the world on a whim, which feels a little cheap and bound to divide viewers. THE VERDICTA solid 7/10. It is a smart, atmospheric, and well-acted thriller that uses the zombie genre to tell a proper, heartfelt story about dealing with grief. It easily secures a 7 because Daisy Ridley is a fantastic lead and the unique, creepy behavior of the undead provides some genuine, spine-chilling scares. It just misses out on a higher score because the pacing gets a bit too sleepy in the middle and the big ending is a bit of a mixed bag.
