    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY A misfit group of high school students, led by the guarded Chrys (Dafne Keen) and her crush Ellie (Sophie Nélisse), stumble upon a cursed ancient Aztec Death Whistle. They quickly realize that blowing the whistle isn't just a bit of schoolyard fun—it summons their "future deaths." Essentially, they are being hunted by demonic versions of themselves that reflect how they are destined to die. Whether it’s burning alive, old age, or a brutal car crash, their future ends are coming for them early. With the help of their eccentric teacher, Mr. Craven (Nick Frost), the group has to dig into the artifact's sacrificial origins to break the chain before their time officially runs out. THE PROS Corin Hardy brings a sincere love for practical effects to the table, and it shows. The "future death" entities are punchy and genuinely unsettling—specifically the "Dead Dean" and the "Burnt Mason" designs, which avoid the quality-deficient CGI traps of most modern horror. Dafne Keen is a winner as Chrys, anchoring the supernatural chaos with a gritty, emotional performance that feels authentic. Nick Frost provides some quality comic relief as the cryptic teacher, keeping the tone from getting too relentlessly bleak. It’s a 6/10 because the "Final Destination meets It Follows" premise is a clever hook that leads to some of the gnarliest and most creative kills of 2026. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because the script is a bit of a damp squib in terms of originality; once the initial "whistle" gimmick is established, it follows a very predictable slasher rhythm. The pacing can feel slightly sluggish in the middle act as they pivot to a heavy exposition dump about Aztec lore that stops the momentum dead. While the lead duo is quality, the rest of the teen cast feels like stock archetypes who are clearly just there to boost the body count. It misses a higher mark because the ending feels a bit rushed and quality-deficient, leaving some of the bigger questions about the artifact's logic unanswered. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Decent and highly recommended for fans of "curse" horror and practical gore. It’s a winner for the creature designs and Dafne Keen’s performance. Go and watch it for the "Aztec shriek"—that sound is proper quality nightmare fuel. The sound is often described by historians as "the scream of a thousand corpses." • Practical Pedigree: Director Corin Hardy (who directed 'The Nun') insisted on using Troy James—the famous contortionist—to play several of the "deaths." His ability to move in non-human ways gave the monsters a punchy, unsettling realism without needing digital intervention. • Sibling Spirit: Dafne Keen and her cousin Sky Yang (who plays Rel) spent weeks bonding before filming to ensure their family dynamic felt sincere on screen. Their real-life chemistry was a major reason why their scenes in the first act feel so grounded. THE VIBE Like a high school hallway that’s slowly filling with smoke.
