⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) is a young woman born with emerald-green skin who has spent her life being misunderstood and sidelined. When she arrives at Shiz University, she forms an unlikely and friction-filled friendship with the popular, self-centered Glinda (Ariana Grande). As they uncover the dark, political rot behind the Wizard of Oz’s golden facade, their paths diverge, setting them on the road to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. It’s a massive, sweeping adaptation of the Broadway phenomenon that finally gives the origin story the cinematic scale it deserves. THE PROS The chemistry between Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande is the heart of the film, and they both absolutely nail the vocals. Erivo brings a gritty, pained depth to Elphaba, while Grande is surprisingly funny and sharp as the shallow-but-growing Glinda. It hits a 9 because the production design is incredible—Munchkinland and Shiz University feel like real, physical places rather than just digital backdrops. The decision to split the story into two parts actually works, giving the friendship time to breathe and making the emotional beats hit harder. It’s an honest, spectacular piece of musical filmmaking that respects the source material while amping up the drama.
