⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Anna Kendrick makes her directorial debut with this bone-chilling true-crime thriller (released on Netflix in late 2024). It’s the late 1970s, and aspiring actress Cheryl Bradshaw (Kendrick) is struggling to make it in a Hollywood that views women as props. Out of desperation, she signs up for The Dating Game. Across from her is Bachelor Number Three, Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto)—a man who is charming, intelligent, and currently in the middle of a gruesome cross-country murder spree. The film tracks their televised meeting while weaving in the stories of Alcala's victims, highlighting the systemic failures that allowed a monster to hide in plain sight. THE PROS Anna Kendrick is a "Guaranteed Banger" behind the camera. She avoids the typical "serial killer worship" of true crime and instead focuses on the quiet, suffocating tension of being a woman in a world that doesn't listen. Daniel Zovatto is terrifyingly good as Alcala; he manages to flip from "gentle soul" to "predator" with a subtle shift in his eyes that will make your skin crawl. The 1970s production design is spot-on, but it’s the script’s focus on the victims’ humanity—rather than just their deaths—that makes this an 8/10.
