⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY A "cure" for mutants has been discovered, derived from the DNA of a young boy named Leech. The mutant community is split: some see it as a gift, others as a threat of genocide. Meanwhile, Jean Grey returns from the dead as the Phoenix, a nearly omnipotent and destructive force that kills Professor X and joins Magneto’s Brotherhood. It all boils down to a massive war on Alcatraz Island, where Wolverine has to make the ultimate sacrifice to stop Jean before she atomizes the world. THE PROS Kelsey Grammer as Beast is a total win; he looks and sounds like he walked straight out of the comics, bringing a quality gravitas to the role. The opening Danger Room sequence featuring a Sentinel is epic and gave fans something they’d been waiting years to see. The action is punchy, especially the Golden Gate Bridge sequence which remains a massive cinematic moment. It’s a 6/10 because it’s still a fun, big-budget spectacle with some decent performances from the returning cast. Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde is a winner, finally giving the character something to do. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because the script is a bit of a damp squib, famously trying to cram two massive comic storylines—the Dark Phoenix Saga and the Mutant Cure—into one short movie. Pacing is seriously sluggish in the middle, and the way they kill off major characters like Cyclops and Professor X feels rushed and quality-deficient. Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut is a bit of a joke and led to some of the cringiest dialogue in the series. It misses a higher mark because it loses the emotional depth of the first two films in favor of mindless explosions. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Decent for the action, but a bit of a letdown for fans of the source material. It’s a winner for Beast and the final battle. Go and watch it to see how the original trilogy wrapped up, but don't expect the quality of 'X2'—it’s a bit messy. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • De-Aging Tech: This was one of the first films to use "digital skin-grafting" to de-age Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen for the opening flashback. The VFX team used old photos of the actors to create complex keyframes, a process that was revolutionary back in 2006.• Directing Musical Chairs: Bryan Singer left the project to direct 'Superman Returns', taking several key crew members with him. Matthew Vaughn was actually hired to replace him and cast Kelsey Grammer, but he quit just before filming started, leading to Brett Ratner taking over at the last minute.• Code Crackers: When Dr. Rao opens the case containing the mutant cure, a serial number is visible: XM89248. As per the legendary tradition of the VFX crews on these films, the digital monitors in the background of the Worthington Labs also feature scrolling "sushi recipe" code hidden among the data. THE VIBE Like a massive firework display that ends a bit too early. It smells like sea salt, burnt leather, and missed opportunities.
