👤 BIOGRAPHY

Hugh Jackman has spent the last twenty-five years making the rest of us look incredibly lazy. The bloke sings, dances, hosts award shows, lifts weights, does his own stunts and somehow still finds the energy to smile through it all. Quite frankly, it's exhausting just thinking about it. If there was ever a competition for "Most Likely to Make Everyone Else Feel Inadequate", Hugh would probably win it and then apologise for showing off.

For millions of fans, though, he'll always be Wolverine. Which is funny really, because when he first landed the role, hardly anyone knew who he was. He was brought in at the last minute after Dougray Scott had to pull out, and the Australian actor suddenly found himself with giant metal claws strapped to his hands. Not bad going for a bloke who'd previously spent more time singing show tunes than slicing people up.

The mad thing is, Hugh somehow made Wolverine his own for nearly two decades. He turned what could've been a one-note angry bloke with sideburns into one of the most beloved characters in comic book history. By the time Logan rolled around, fans weren't just watching a superhero film. They were saying goodbye to an old mate. Not many actors get that sort of connection with audiences.

Mind you, if all you know him from is the X-Men films, you're missing half the story. Hugh's always had one foot in Hollywood and the other in musical theatre. One minute he's growling and throwing people through walls, the next he's singing his lungs out in Les Misérables or dancing around in The Greatest Showman. Most actors spend their careers trying to avoid being put in a box. Hugh smashed the box to bits years ago and turned it into a stage prop.

And then there's his friendship with Ryan Reynolds, which has become one of the longest-running acts of mutual mickey-taking in human history. Honestly, it's sometimes hard to tell whether they actually like each other or are just trapped in the world's friendliest feud.

Insomniacs Trivia

• Hugh almost missed out on Wolverine altogether. He only got the role after Dougray Scott became unavailable because filming on Mission: Impossible II overran. Somewhere in the multiverse, there's a very different X-Men franchise.

• Before acting took over his life, Hugh worked as a PE teacher in England. Imagine turning up for sports day and finding Wolverine telling you to run another lap.

• His fake feud with Ryan Reynolds has raised millions for charity and become one of the funniest ongoing friendships in Hollywood. The pair spend so much time taking the mickey out of each other that nobody's entirely sure when it started.

Insomniacs Take

Hugh Jackman is one of those annoyingly talented people who seems good at absolutely everything. He can make you laugh, break your heart, belt out a song and then grow a pair of sideburns capable of frightening small children. But what really makes him special is that despite all the success, he still comes across as one of the nicest blokes in the business. Which is probably why audiences have stuck by him for so long. And honestly, anyone who can go from Wolverine to The Greatest Showman without losing the plot deserves a standing ovation.
