⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Laura Franco (Melissa Barrera) is having a nightmare of a year. After a cancer diagnosis and a brutal breakup with her long-term boyfriend, she retreats to her childhood home to rot in peace. Her plans for misery are interrupted when she discovers a literal Monster (Tommy Dewey) living in her closet. Instead of eating her, the Monster helps her reclaim her voice and her rage. It’s a dark, gritty romantic comedy that mashes together Broadway musical vibes with a psychological "Beauty and the Beast" spin for the modern era. THE PROS Melissa Barrera is great as the crumbling but resilient Laura. She makes the transition from a broken-down victim to someone who is ready to set her life on fire feel honest and earned. Tommy Dewey is the standout, though; his Monster is sarcastic and charming without losing that predatory edge. It hits a 7 because the film isn't afraid to be weird.
