Overview

Five years after the death of schoolgirl Andie Bell, Pippa Fitz-Amobi sets out to uncover what really happened to her. Sal Singh, Andie's boyfriend, admitted to the murder before taking his own life, but Pip doesn't believe he's responsible and teams up with Sal's brother Ravi to uncover the truth. If Sal Singh isn't a murderer and the real killer is still out there, how far will they go to keep Pip from finding out the truth?

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 ​ THE SUMMARY ​Pip Fitz-Amobi is the kind of student who treats her homework like a homicide investigation—literally. For her final school project, she decides to "re-open" the five-year-old murder-suicide of local golden girl Andie Bell and her boyfriend Sal Singh. While the rest of the town is happy to leave the past buried, Pip teams up with Sal’s brother to prove that the real killer is still out there, probably grabbing a coffee at the local shop while she ruins her social life to find them. ​ THE PROS ​Emma Myers carries this show with the same "investigative gremlin" energy that made her a fan favorite in Wednesday. She makes Pip feel like a real teen, not a 30-year-old actor in a hoodie. The chemistry between her and Ravi is the highlight—it’s sweet, awkward, and provides some much-needed breathing room between the threatening texts and dark secrets. The mystery is actually solid, with enough red herrings to keep you guessing even if you think you’ve seen every trope in the book. ​ THE CONS ​It’s very "Netflix Teen Mystery." If you’re over the age of 25, the sudden shifts into "Instagram-stalking-as-detective-work" and teen party drama might make you feel a bit old. Some of the logic leaps Pip makes are a bit of a stretch, and the town’s collective decision to hate one specific family feels a bit heavy-handed at times. Also, the pacing stutters in the middle episodes, making the 45-minute runtime feel a little longer than it needs to be. ​ THE VERDICT ​It’s a fun, binge-able "YA Noir" that’s perfect for a rainy weekend. It doesn't quite have the grit of True Detective or the wit of Knives Out, but it’s a solid 7 that respects its audience and its source material. It won't change your life, but it’ll definitely make you want to start a case board in your bedroom. ​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA ​ Emma Myers is a massive fan of Korean culture and K-pop (specifically the group SEVENTEEN), which is a funny contrast to the very British, small-town vibe of the show. Also, the author of the books, Holly Jackson, was heavily involved in the production and actually cameoed as an extra in one of the party scenes—blink and you’ll miss her. ​ THE VIBE ​ Like a high-stakes scavenger hunt through your hometown where the "prize" is a massive secret and a potential death threat. Cozy but sharp.
