⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY The 2017 HBO drama that transformed the "mommy-wars" of Monterey into a visceral, prestige thriller. Big Little Lies brings together a group of women whose lives are as pristine as their ocean views—until a fundraiser ends in a literal "drop-dead" finale. It is a sharp, biting archive of suburban secrets, domestic trauma, and the lengths people will go to protect a curated image. While it started as a limited series, its massive success birthed a second season in 2019 that focused on the regal, messy fallout of a shared lie. THE PROS The ensemble is a 100% authentic win; having Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Laura Dern sharing a frame is a regal achievement in itself. Nicole Kidman’s performance is a total win—her portrayal of a woman trapped in a visceral, abusive marriage is heart-shattering and entirely sincere. The direction in the first season was a gripping feat of atmosphere, using the crashing waves and the Monterey mist as a metaphor for the characters' internal chaos. It remains the "Go To" for anyone who wants a thriller that is as intelligent as it is aesthetically regal.
